Also known as structured flooring, it has become hugely popular with specifiers, architects, joiners and floor fitters.
In most cases being constructed of several layers of birch, laid and pressed at 90 degree angles. Then a premium layer of oak, walnut maple etc is used as a surface layer. Thickness of this layer obviously depends on prices but ranges from 1.5mm to 6mm.
Because engineered flooring is constructed this way it makes it a lot more stable than a solid wood. Thus enabling a much more cost effective and easier installation.
These floors can be floated on top of a suitable underlay. Although a premium engineered (8mm wear layer) is often glued down to ensure an even and solid floor when sanding in the future.
Some engineered floors have a click system for easier installation and can be taken up and reinstalled.
Others are glue to each other (T&G) using PVA glue.
You can glue down engineered flooring if preferred.
